Project description

The work package WP3B1 comprises the tasks development and evaluation of teaching concepts and teaching material for courses on biology. The evaluation will be carried out as a formative eva-luation that provides guidance for developing and structuring concepts and material and as a sum-mative evaluation that documents and judges what the work package accomplished. The evaluati-on will be based on the CIPP (context, input, process, and product) model, a framework for the systematic principled evaluation of a program. The advantage of CIPP evaluations is to provide sound information that will help service providers to regularly assess and improve services and to make effective and efficient use of resources, time, and technology in order to appropriately and equitably serve the well-being of rightful beneficiaries.
The evaluations of the teaching materials developed within WP3B1 will answer the following ques-tion: Are the educational materials developed appropriate for each age group, the existing prior knowledge, the requirements that the curriculum provides, and perceived suitability from the tea-chers‘ point of view? The evaluation of the concept for the implementation of nutrition and health into the school subject biology will focus on the following fundamental questions: Do the children and adolescents who have been taught have more knowledge and more competence to eat healthy after the lessons? Is the concept developed implementable in schools’ routine from the teacher's point of view?
Qualitative and quantitative methods of social sciences research will be carried out and evaluated in an experienced team to assure the scientific quality assurance of the work package.


For the evaluation of the teaching material, the needs for the different age groups and school ty-pes have to be assessed. For this purpose, we will first analyse curricula (documentary analysis) and second determine students' prior knowledge in a standardized written surveys in the various age groups and types of schools. After the prototypes of the teaching materials have been developed, the questions of the appropriateness and suitability of the materials for the respective age groups will be examined. For this purpose, a qualitative assessment of the revised materials by represen-tatives of the respective target groups and their teachers will be provided. In order to assess the age adequacy of the proposed material, a written survey and a cognitive pretest with the designed materials will be conducted. These measures will be implemented with the target group of children and adolescents. This will be complemented by group discussions of teachers.

To test the effectiveness of the new teaching concepts, we will first test the knowledge of the stu-dents in a standardized survey carried out with an age-appropriate written questionnaire (pre- and post classes design). More interesting in terms of competence-oriented educational concepts will be a survey of nutrition-related skills. We will develop practical tests for the students. For example to set the task to the students in the supermarket ’Choose food for a healthy lunch and report what you will cook from it.’ If school kitchens are available, practical tasks in cooking could also be provided to evaluate students’ skills.

The practicability of the new teaching concept should be assessed from the point of view of the teachers. For this purpose, a written survey of the teachers will be conducted on their experiences with the new teaching
